Where to eat in Maui

Eating on Maui has to be one of my all time favorites. The food on Maui is so fresh and abundant. I have been to many places primarily on the Westside. They all have something wonderful depending on what time it is and what you are in the mood for.

Hula Grill-    The Hula grill is located on Ka'anapali Beach at the Whaler's Center. The restaurant is actually two restaurants in one. Around the beach and Bar is the Barefoot Grill and around the kitchen is the main restaurant. The Barefoot Bar is a great place to have a cold one after a day at the beach. They have a different menu from the main restaurant but if you eat at the bar then you can order off both menus. I have watched many football games at the bar as well as met many people from around the world. My friend, Mike, is usually found behind the bar and is known for patented "Woo Hoo!!!" drink guaranteed to put some Aloha in you heart and soul. If you need help in deciding what to do in Maui or what to drink, Mike is the one to ask.

In the main restaurant, my very good friend, Bobby Masters, is the head chef. Bobby is known Island wide for is creations pared with incredible sauces. I try to sit at the counter next to the kitchen. It is always a delight to watch the chefs creating all of the sumptuous meals. I always ask for the "Specials List" and usually order the meat special. Everyone loves Bobby's Opakapaka and crabcakes. My father has been treated to Bobby's Steamed Whole Fish on occasion and just mentioning it to him causes a smile. If you want this you need to ask Bobby a few days in advance.

I have frequented the Hula Grill quite often. It is always a place that I bring friends and loved-ones to. On occasion I have even spotted a movie star or golf legend.

Kimos-    Kimos is located in Lahaina Town on Front Street. Kimos is one of the older established places with traditional Hawaiian Style setting complete with Koa wood tables, tiki torches and spectacular sunset views. I like to reserve a table 1/2 hour before sunset on the upper balcony, oceanside. By the second tropical drink the sun is melting behind Lanai. On many Friday and Saturday nights you can hear a good local band play in the bar, oceanside. No trip nor birthday is complete for me with out having Kimos famous Prime Rib. It is HUGE and so "Ono". Of course it should be finished up with their patented Hula Pie.

Lahaina Oyster Bar and Grill-  I recently discovered this restaurant during my most recent trip in Maui. I took Dad here for one of his many birthday dinners, and we were happily surprised by what we discovered. Located at the beginning of Front Street, it was a great place to party roof-top while eating an excellent selection oysters.  We were treated to a fabulous sunset behind the slopes of Mauna Kahalwai while relaxing on the open-air rooftop dining deck. Inside was a 47 foot long oyster bar surrounded by the fun historic atmosphere.

The world renowned Roy's Kahana Bar and Grill located just north of Ka'anapali in Kahana has been featured on Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. Their Hawaiian Fusion Cuisine is incredible. I always have trouble deciding on what to eat but I always start with their signature ribs for an appetizer and finish with my wife's favorite chocolate soufflé (Order this 40 minutes early). Their cook book is very popular but not for the meek. Roy's is a favorite haunt during the Mercedes Championship to mingle with the Pros.

Honokowai Okazuya and Deli is more affectionately called "Deli!!!" by myself and most of my friends. It is located in Honokowai just north of Star Market at 3600 Lower Honoapiilani Road #D. Phenomenal Teriyaki Beef over rice and Black Bean Beef Chow Fun. mmmmmmmmmmm Great for lunch or dinner to go.

For breakfast the place to go is Gazebo's in the Napili Shores Resort. Located on the beach overlooking the Napili cove and Molokai this is the best breakfast on Maui. My favorites are; Big Kahuna omelet, combination fried rice and mac nut/banana pancakes with maple syrup whipped cream. Very reasonable prices.

Maui Tacos is the most famous and Best Mexican food on the Island. It is a no-brainer for lunch when in Lahaina Towne. Be aware of the birds, they will help you eat the food right off your plate.

Longhi's is an incredible seafood lover's paradise located on Front Street in Lahaina Towne. Their Seafood combo will impress that certain someone. Friday nights they turn the upstairs into a night club with a good local band (Crazy Fingers) playing danceable top 40s and R&B. Dress to Impress  $$$$$

Mama's Fish House is located on "Other Side" 2 miles south of Paia. It is about a 50 minute ride from Ka'anapali Beach and worth it. I have celebrated many romantic occasions there and will remember it fondly. Very good and fresh seafood (the fish is caught that day) $$$$$

Sansei is one of the best sushi restaurants that I have ever been to. It is located in Kapalua, about a 15 minute drive from Ka'anapali. My favorite time to go is on Thursday nights after 10 PM. That is when sushi and drinks are 1/2 off and when they host Karaoke. It is a happening time, some of the singers are quite good and a few should see Simon about a different direction.

Dollie's Pizza in Kahana is my favorite place to go for pizza. It is also a good place to watch sports and drink beer if the weather is not so nice.

Most of the Condo Resorts have barbeque areas available for guests. Maui has the perfect weather for a barbequing. You can find just about everything for a barbeque at Star Market but if you really want to splurge then go to Fish and Game Restaurant in Kahana to buy your meat or fish.

Pretty much everywhere you go you will find some good place to eat. The above list is my favorites. Send me an e-mail with yours and I will try them. Who knows, maybe I will add them to my list... To find places with out websites go to
